Dr Hiroaki Furumai is a professor of the Research Center for Water Environment Technology, the University of Tokyo. He also has a joint appointment as professor at the Department of Urban Engineering. His research interests are i) Sustainable urban drainage management focusing on water pollution control and dynamics, and ii) Water quality characterization and evaluation for sustainable urban water use. He is an IWA Distinguished Fellow and was the IWA Board of Director (2012-2018). He played the president role of the IWA World Water Congress Tokyo 2018. He was the past president (2016-2017) of the Japan Society on Water Environment and also an editor (2008-2017) of Water Research Journal.
